Stop renting your store.

Shopify deleted a whole category overnight. We move deplatformed merchants onto Medusa: commerce you host yourself, with no account for anyone to close.

Free, no obligation, and the written plan is yours to keep.

Your store on Shopify
Switched off on 8 July.

Their platform, their policy, their call. You got a notice and a date.

Your store on Medusa
Nobody’s to switch off.

Your server, your code, your call. There is no vendor to appeal to, and none to be evicted by.

Built on the open stack the modern web runs on

01What happened

Sixteen days from headline to shutdown.

23 Jun

Reuters reports a platform-wide vape ban for US merchants, FDA-authorised products included.

24 Jun

Notices land: Shopify no longer supports e-cigarettes, e-liquids, vaporizers, parts or refills.

8 Jul

Deadline. Stores that hadn't stripped their catalogue faced delisting or termination.

Now

The ban is categorical, not case-by-case. Appeals rarely help when the banned category is the business.

02What Medusa is

Not a store builder. An engine you run.

Open-source, MIT-licensed, written in TypeScript. Your storefront talks to it over an API, on a server you rent from anyone. There’s no merchant account above it to lose.

01
Your infrastructure
A codebase and a database. Move it whenever you like.
02
Age gating built in
State blocks and ID checks in your own checkout, not an app that can be pulled.
03
Swappable payments
When a processor drops your category, you change a module, not the store.
04
No hostage data
Products, customers and order history stay yours to query and export.
03Composable

Your whole stack, composed onto one engine.

Payments, search, database, storefront: each is a module you choose and can swap. They compose around a Medusa core you own, so no single vendor can take the whole thing down.

04The migration

Four phases. You keep selling through all of them.

Nothing switches over until the new store does everything the old one did. If your admin is already gone, we start from your exports.

Phase 00Free

Audit

We read your store and hand back a written plan and a fixed quote.

About 3 working days
Phase 01

Extract

Everything out first, before access becomes a question.

Week one
Phase 02

Rebuild

Backend and storefront to parity: age checks, gateway, shipping, tax, the apps you relied on.

The bulk of it
Phase 03

Cutover

Full redirect map, both stores in parallel, then DNS on a quiet morning.

One morning

Typically four to eight weeks from signed plan to cutover. If yours is longer, you’ll hear it in the audit rather than at week six.

05Straight answers

Including the ones that don’t flatter us.

Can I be banned from a self-hosted store?+

Not from the store, because there's no account to close. But your host, registrar and processor still have terms. The audit includes hosts and registrars without a category clause.

What about payments? That's my real problem.+

Medusa won't get you a merchant account, and we won't pretend otherwise. It makes the gateway swappable, so a processor dropping you costs days instead of a rebuild. If you have no viable processor at all, we'll say so rather than take the project.

I'm not technical. Am I signing up to run a server?+

No. Day to day you use an admin panel much like the one you have. Someone does have to patch and back it up: your developer, our retainer, or a managed host. All three are priced in the audit.

Will I lose my search rankings?+

Not if the redirect map is complete. Every URL is mapped before cutover. Rankings wobble for a week or two on any move and recover when the redirects are right.

What does it cost?+

A fixed quote after the audit. We don't publish a starting price we'd have to walk back on the first call. The audit is free and yours to keep. Take it to another studio if you'd rather.

My store is already suspended. Too late?+

Usually not. Suspension and deletion are different, and API access often survives a while. Whatever you decide about us, do this today: export your products and customers, request the order export, download your theme.

Find out what it takes to own your store.

Tell us where your store is and what you sell. About three working days later you get a plan and a fixed quote, yours to keep.
